The Akuapem South District is 403 sq km in size.
It shares boundaries with the Akuapem North in the north, Ga District in the south, Tema Municipality in the East and Suhum Kraboa-Coaltar and West Akim in the West. The District Capital, Nsawam is located along the Accra Kumasi road and it is about 23 km from Accra.

Research was conducted in the Akuapem South District to determine the existing infrastructure facilities, human resources available and explore the perception of the people of Akuapem South District about the government portal and how the Internet facility will help them.
The District Assembly Office located in Nsawam, the District Capital was selected as ideal for the test site. The inspection was undertaken with the assistance of the Resident Engineer at the District Office and Conference Room Numbered 7 selected. This room is not utilised by the District Assembly at present. The room is reasonably safe and secure; it has adequate ventilation, lighting electrical facilities and a good view. Conference Room Numbered 7 is large enough to accommodate at least 25 people. |
The room can be utilised as an Internet room and also a training room
on the uses of the Internet by all the various stakeholders in the Akuapem South District.
Investigations have revealed that the District Assembly Office has only one telephone line. The District Office is going to put in an application for additional 4 lines as a matter of urgency.
The District Chief Executive Mr Nyarko Adu has granted permission for the Conference Room Numbered 7 to be utilised as a Test Site for the project.
Research was also conducted on various organisations in the Akuapem South District. For instance the National Fire Service for the Akuapem South District.
The research reveals the number of people employed by the Nsawam Fire Service is 70, the offices are not computerised, manual typewriters are utilised in the offices, and mode of communication is Radio Telephone Communication.

Further the Aburi Industrial Centre, a small-scale wood carving industry was studied. With the Internet facility, the wood carvers will be able to have their products promoted. Buyers all over the world will be able to make purchases via the Internet. The carvers can then make their orders and when payment is received, the woodcarvings can be mailed to buyers. This will speed up the sale process and the Industrial Centre can earn some foreign exchange. The wood

The Akuapem South District Assembly Set-Up
The Akuapem South District was established by Legislative Instrument L1 152A on 15th October1991 by the Provisional National Defence Council. The District Assembly is empowered by Local Government Act 1993 Act 462 to exercise political and administrative authority in the District, to provide guidance, give direction to, and supervise all other administrative authorities in the District.
There is a District Chief Executive who is appointed by the President with the prior approval of not less than two-thirds majority of the members of the District Assembly present and voting at the meeting
Functions of the District Chief Executive (“DCE”)
The DCE is responsible for the day to day execution and administrative functions of the Assembly, supervises all the departments of the Assembly and is also the chief representative of central government.
The Akuapem South District Assembly comprises of 42 elected members; 18 appointed members and one member of parliament in accordance with section 50 of the Local Government Act 1993 Act 463. The Local Government substructures were formally inaugurated in 1988 throughout the district.
The Assembly has one urban Council and 6 Area Councils namely:-

The Akuapem South District is the only District with 3 traditional Senior Divisions of chiefs two of them owning traditional allegiance outside the district. The Adoagyirihene is the Ankobeahene of Akim Kotoku traditional area in the Brim
South District. The other chief is the Sakyikromene who is the Krontihene of Akwamu traditional area in the Asuogyman district and there is the Aburihene who is the Omanhene of Akuapem Anafo traditional area
The Akuapem South District in line with government objectives enshrined in the 2020 vision document has set the stage to implement medium term development plans which will accelerate growth, development and attract more investors to
the district.
The Akuapem South District has a population of 116,3441; 49.3% are male i.e. 57,506, 50.7% are female i.e. 59,038. About 405 of the population are youth thus indicating that the District has youthful population. The District has a population density of 289 per square km and a male to female ratio of 97.1%.
The average household size is about 3.9 with about 15.4 persons living within a compound.
40% of the people in the District are Farmers. 26% of the people in the District are traders. The remaining 33.7% are in industrial or service sectors. There is therefore the indication that Agriculture is the main economic activity in the
District followed by commerce. A significant number of the traders in the District are bakers and bread retailers. Nsawam is also known as The Bread City of Ghana.
The ethnic groups in the District are Akuapems, Ewes and Ga-Adangbes The educational status of the people in the District is good. The literacy ratio is far above the national average.
